How to stay consistent with your content marketing

How to stay consistent with your content marketing

Content creation & marketing takes time, and it’s easy to run out of steam. So how can we stay consistent?

Showing up on your various content marketing platforms week-in-week-out can be draining, especially if you don’t have a good system in place to keep you consistent.

I’ve been creating content consistently across 2 different businesses, and multiple different platforms since 2015, all without a big, dedicated marketing team, and without sacrificing work with my website design clients. So I’m sharing some of my best tips & strategies so you can do this too!

Why is consistency with content marketing important?

In order to grow an audience of potential clients and customers that love hearing from your brand and what to buy from you, creating content and showing up on the platforms that they’re hanging out on (whether that’s Instagram, podcasts, YouTube… you name it!) is the best, organic way to that.

Being consistent with showing up in this way shows our audience that we are not only reliable, but also that we’re a source they may want to check in on regularly to see ‘what’s new!’.

Content marketing is like a compounding habit. In the book ‘The Compound Effect’, Darren Hardy talks about how consistency achieves momentum. The more consistent you are, the easier it becomes to show up consistently, and it compounds from there!

We want to create this momentum in our marketing and content creation.

    1. Understand that marketing is a key, necessary part of running a business

If you’re running a business, marketing is a non-negotiable. I know it may not be your favourite thing, and it’s probably not the reason why you started your business in the first place, but where would you be without?

No clients to work with because no one has heard of you. No products to create because you don’t have any sales coming from your website.

We NEED marketing, and it needs to be treated as a serious area of your business.

You don’t need a whole marketing team in your business if you’re just starting out, or if you’re a one man/woman band. You just need to have dedicated time set aside each week for your marketing.

If you’re treating marketing as an afterthought, or just trying to squeeze it in ‘if you have time’, you’ll find it hard to stay consistent, and very hard to see results.

    2. Set goals for your content marketing

When we set goals, and we understand the WHY behind those goals, this can help us stay motivated to be consistent.

What is it that you want to achieve with your content marketing? Ultimately, more sales / more clients, I’m sure!

So how are you going to get there? Maybe you’ll use Blogging to get more traffic to your website, where you can promote your products. So perhaps your goal is X amount more website traffic.

Or maybe you’ll use Email Marketing to share your expertise and promote your services, so perhaps your goal is to get X amount of subscribers while maintaining an X% email click rate.

And don’t forget to make these goals time-bound too. WHEN do you want to have achieved this by?

Eg. I want X amount more website traffic on my website by Dec 2023.

Now that you know what you’re aiming for, this can help to motivate you to work towards this week on week! And don’t forget to celebrate your wins too (this is something I always forget). Make a big deal out of achieving those goals for added motivation too!

    3. Be prepared with your brand

You know what’s really going to be a waste of your time? Creating content that your target audience & ideal customers don’t care about.

So make sure that before you start investing time & effort in being more consistent in content creation, you get super clear on exactly WHO your ideal customers are. This will help to inform you on:

    • The platforms they’re likely to be using (and that you can therefore use too!)

    • What messaging will best speak to them in your content

    • What content topics they will be interested in

As well as this, having all of your brand assets (eg. logos, colour palettes, patterns & fonts) ready to go and with clear guidelines about HOW to apply them to graphics and content, is going to make your content creation process quicker and easier too.

    4. Streamline your content marketing

    Simplify your content platforms

You don’t have to be on ALL the platforms. In fact, attempting to do this is a sure-fire way to guarantee you’re not able to stay consistent. So just pick a couple that are either working for you right now, or that you enjoy and you know your ideal customers are using.

Pick a realistic schedule that works for you

When I say ‘consistent content marketing’, that doesn’t mean I’m telling you to post every single day on Instagram. It doesn’t mean I’m saying you need to post blog posts 2 x a week.

Consistency just means sticking to a regular schedule or routine, but YOU get to decide what that schedule looks like. Just choose something that’s manageable for you right now, and stick to it!

Plan ahead & constantly capture ideas

Create some kind of a content calendar and place where you can store ideas. This means you can see your schedule at a glance and what needs doing, and having a bank of ideas means you’ll never NOT know what to say.

    Make the process easy

When you stick to creating content that plays to your strengths, break things down into small steps, use templates, and schedule in time to batch create things in one go, the whole content creation process will become EASY. And when it’s easy, we’re more likely to stay consistent!

    5. Automate your content marketing

Create a repeatable content creation process

If you make your process super easy (as I explained above), and easy to repeat again and again, you’ll end up being able to create content as if you’re on autopilot.

Use AI to speed up the process

Getting used to using Artificial Intelligence technology to help with your content creation doesn’t have to be scary or complicated. It’s like having your own marketing assistant to help you!

Use scheduling tools to automate posting

You don’t have to be there every second of the day, or interrupting your daily work flow, to post a piece of content. Use scheduling tools to automate this.

    6. Repurpose your content marketing

We really want to maximise the opportunity we have with each piece of content to get our message across, so why not repurpose it and use it for other platforms and in other formats? This is one of the best ways to stay consistent, because it means you can create more content in less time, and squeeze the most out of everything you do.
